Careers: CVs and cover letters for roles OUTSIDE academia

The aim of this workshop is to help researchers to write effective CVs and cover letters for positions outside academia.
If you are interested in the wide ranging opportunities for researchers in the private, public and charity sectors or in professional services within higher education, this workshop will help you to successfully market your expertise and transferable skills from your research and other experiences.
This is a group session which will allow researchers to also share experience and tips with each other.

Aimed at

Doctoral Researchers (mid stage, final stage) and Postdoctoral Researchers

Pre-requisites

Participants are encouraged to look at job descriptions of positions that they wish to apply for or are interested in and to bring their up to date CV and any previous cover letters to the session.

Prior to the session, please refer to the career support for researchers  online advice, in particular the 'what are my career options' and 'how to apply' sections.

Key learning outcomes

By the end of this session participants will have an understanding of:
  • How to write high quality CVs and cover letters for roles outside academia

Session outline and aims

This session will be facilitated led by the trainer and will cover: 

  • How employers outside academia may view academic researchers
  • How to analyse job adverts for roles outside academia and tailor application documents accordingly
  • How to present experience and achievements with impact, using language that employers outside academia will relate to
  • How to convince employers of your desire to work in roles / organisations outside academia

This will be an interactive session and participants are encouraged to ask questions and share any previous application experience.
