Publishing your research with academic rigour & journalistic flair
This workshop will introduce The Conversation as a news platform and the techniques necessary for academics to reach an audience beyond academia. We will cover style, tone, structure and approaches to writing for the general public. You will be facilitated to think about your research in a way that captures its most interesting elements. We will explain how The Conversation works and its benefits.
Finally, after sharpening your ideas with the help of an editor, you will be supported with writing a piece to be published in The Conversation.
Aimed at
Doctoral Researchers (mid-stage, final stage), Doctoral Research staffPre-requisites
- Please bring a laptop to work on.
- Think about your research and expertise: what aspects would be interesting to a non-academic audience?
- Follow the news: what stories in the news are relevant to your expertise? How could you add something to the debate?

Key learning outcomes
By the end of this session participants will have an understanding of:
- Writing articles in a journalistic rather than academic style and structure
- Identifying which elements of their research would interest a general reader and focus on them
- Using The Conversation as a platform to engage the public and demonstrate their reach through our readership statistics
