Qualitative Research Methods: Researching Beneath the Surface - Narratives
The two-day event aims to explore the use and impact of narratives in research. It provides an opportunity to explore novel and innovative qualitative research methods with a number of expert researchers. It comprises of lectures, workshops and a discussion forum for PGR students.
Aimed atResearchers (early stage, mid stage, final stage), Research staff
Participants must already have a firm grounding in qualitative methods and approaches (such as interviews, focus groups, ethnography, etc).
Key learning outcomes
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Understand different ways in which narratives can form part of a qualitative research process
- Understand the challenges of data analysis and re-presentation in narrative research
- Understand how narratives can be used to enhance qualitative research which seeks to understand aspects of lives
Session outline and aims
Participants will learn about ways of using narratives as part of qualitative research methodologies. Participants will increase their confidence and ability to work with narratives in their research.
DAY 1: Presentations by experts and small group parallel workshops.
DAY 2: OPTIONAL Students and staff are invited to present their work to date for discussion with the group in a supportive environment

Participants will be viewing presentations projected onto a SMART Board screen. Participants may be required to work in groups. Refreshments may be available at the venue.
