Qualitative Research Methods: Researching Beneath the Surface - Ethnography

The two-day event aims to explore the use and impact of ethnography in research. It provides an opportunity to explore novel and innovative qualitative research methods with a number of expert researchers. It comprises of lectures, workshops and a discussion forum for PGR students.

Aimed at

Researchers (early stage, mid stage, final stage), Research staff

Pre-requisites

Participants must already have a firm grounding in qualitative methods and approaches (such as interviews, focus groups, ethnography, etc).

Key learning outcomes

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Understand different ways in which ethnography can form part of a qualitative research process
  • Understand the challenges of data analysis and re-presentation in ethnographic research
  • Understand how ethnography can be used to enhance qualitative research

Session outline and aims

Participants will learn about ways of using ethnography as part of qualitative research methodologies. Participants will increase their confidence and ability to work ethnographically in their research.

DAY 1: Presentations by experts and small group parallel workshops.

DAY 2: OPTIONAL Students and staff are invited to present their work to date for discussion with the group in a supportive environment.
